AquaTech Eco Consultants was contracted by the City of Casselberry to plant 100 eelgrass, or Vallis-neria americana, planting units, called “burritos,” within 10 herbivory exclusion cages and an exclusion fencing in Lake Concord. These units are prepared and grown out at the aquaculture facility for months before being planted in the field. This gives the plants’ root systems an opportunity to become dense and the leaves a chance to achieve length, all variables which will improve the plants’ ability to survive and thrive once they are planted in a restoration area. The planting units were protected from predation by herbivores with exclusion cages and exclusion fencing.
